Last year, OLPA — in partnership with Woods Keeper and Birds Georgia — launched a long-term Native Habitat Management Strategy to protect and restore the ecological health of Deepdene Forest. As one of Atlanta’s rare surviving old-growth Piedmont forests, Deepdene’s 22 acres provide vital wildlife habitat, stormwater benefits, and a peaceful natural retreat for the community.
This strategy guides our ongoing work to:
Control invasive plant species
Strengthen native habitat structure and biodiversity
Continue and expand restoration efforts
Engage volunteers in hands-on stewardship
Together, we can ensure Deepdene remains a thriving forest ecosystem for generations to come.
How Restoration Happens — Season by Season
This approach aligns with plant growth cycles to maximize effectiveness and minimize disturbance:
Spring–Summer - Focus on fast-spreading invasive annuals (e.g., chaff flower, stiltgrass).
Fall - Begin targeted woody invasive removal (privet, wisteria, cherry laurel).
Winter - Remove evergreen invasive groundcovers (English ivy, Elaeagnus, wintercreeper, Liriope) and remove harmful vines from trees while protecting beneficial native climbers.
Deepdene’s native habitat is on a strong upward trajectory thanks to this science-based plan — and the passionate volunteers who are putting it into action. We are grateful for our partnership with Woods Keeper and Birds Georgia as we continue this important work to restore a healthier, more resilient forest.
But we can’t do it alone.
We invite neighbors, nature lovers, and park champions to get involved in Deepdene’s ongoing restoration:
Join a monthly volunteer workday — Learn about native species and make a visible impact.
Explore the trails — See firsthand how our forests are improving.
Deepdene thrives when the community cares for it. Together, we’re protecting this incredible natural treasure so it can inspire and sustain future generations. Come join us!
